Temporal Mandibular Joint disorder is a tension that resides in our jaw area: muscles and joints. Stress affects so many of us and does normally lead to tightness and tension in the jaw, head, and neck area. TMJ can present itself as more than jaw pain. Its symptoms include teeth grinding, neck pain, muscle spasms, lockjaw, and inflammation, and in some cases, it can even influence facial muscle development.
Gua Sha can be a great natural pain relief aid in these cases. If you are pressed by time, this is a technique you can do yourself at home to help relieve the symptoms and tensions in your muscles.
Gua Sha is a great tool that can help relax your muscles and melt the stress of the day away. The massage performed with this tool helps increase circulation, which releases the tension in the jaw area. It helps drain the lymph, which eliminates toxins stored there. It is a great massage tool because it essentially does the work for you. You do not need to know any special techniques. The hardness of the blade helps you find just the exact pressure you need to apply, without using your hands and fingers to do the work.
Here is a step-by-step guide to Gua Sha TMJ treatment anyone can do at home.
Step 1. Prep the skin
Always start with a face cleanse; any treatment is best done on clean skin.
Next, you will need to moisturize the area. Like any massage, it is more efficient and is less harsh for your skin. Because the face is a sensitive area, we do need to be extra gentle. Using oil can serve you best because it is extra hydrating and slippery enough for the Gua Sha board to run over smoothly.
Step 2. Massage
You can start with your neck to help relieve the tension and relax your muscles. Use light to medium pressure and place the tool flat against your skin. Scrape up towards your jawline, ending each movement with a little wiggle for an extra massage on the bone. Repeat each stroke several times.
Move to the jawline and cheeks.
Start scraping from the middle of your chin towards your ears. Use the tool to trace under and over your cheekbone, always moving towards your hairline. Repeat the movement a few times on each side, ending with a short and circular movement for extra tension release.
Using a Gua Sha, scrape over the jawbone in a downward movement, and across your cheek in an outward movement.
Lastly, use the tool to make small circular movements around the jaw muscles on each side. This technique can also help calm symptoms like teeth grinding. Then repeat the neck scaping, but this time in a downward motion, to encourage lymph drainage.
As an extra relaxation technique, use the comb Gua Sha to scrape across your forehead. This can also help relieve tension caused by stress and headaches and can help calm you down after an intense day. If you have time to do this daily, it can greatly benefit not only TMJ symptoms but also help improve blood circulation, skin health, and lymph drainage.
